History

"Joe (15 Years) - "Sitting Bull (8 months)
*Update August 13th, 1996*
Lazy J Longhorns is founded with its first purchase of 1 bull,
(Sitting Bull), a pair, (Navajo Sun with Cloud Dancer at side),
and a bred heifer (Blue Thunder)  The ranch is just north
of the Flint Hills in North East Kansas.   At the age of 15 years old
I started the Longhorn ranch which was a dream of mine since I can
even remember.  I had always wanted to raise the magnificent Texas
Longhorn breed.  That dream had started to become true.
As a 4 year old bull "Sitting Bull" only measured 45"

"Joe" (22 Years) & High Stakes (9 Years)
The herd increased over the next year to over 50 head.  By 1999
the herd was in the 100's for total longhorns.  In 1998 we purchased
the key to our entire program and the foundation to our herd.  His name
was High Stakes.  A 1993 son of High Roller and from the 71" Tip to Tip
cow Ozark Mountain Queen.  High Stakes measured an incredible 63 3/4"
and 84" poll.  It was a major horn boost for our herd.  We built a program around him.
In the photo, I am 6'4.  So it doesn't show how really massive his height was.
In his prime he weighed 2200lbs, with a 63 1/2" hip height.
We still retain many daughters of him in the herd as we sold him at the age
of 11 years old.  To replace him we used a son of Gunman and also Rock Star,
a famous son of Phenomenon and the 80" Starlight.  Rock Star was sold
at the Eddie Wood Summer Cowtown Sale in 2003 where he was high selling
bull of the entire sale and 2nd high selling lot.  Rock Star is now owned
by the owner of Starlight, Dr Zech Dameron III.   At that time, Rock Star's
mother and High Stakes mother were both over 70".  At the age of 21 I believe
I was the youngest person in the breed to have 2 sires with over 70" horned mom's.

"Joe (24 Years) & Guardian (5 Years)
In 2004 we sold more cattle then we had ever sold in the previous 8 years
of raising Texas Longhorns.  We cut our numbers down to where we only
kept the foundation stock we had been raising.  Daughters of original cows
etc.  We wanted to focus more on the "quality then quantity"   This year
we purchased two herd sires that would change our program for the better
dramatically.  Their names are PCC Detonator which we purchased from the
herd of Scott Pace (Pace Texas Longhorns).  Scott and his father-in-law
Dan are two of the best people you will meet in the Longhorn Breed.  Along
with the purchase of Detonator we bought Guardian.  A Darol Dickinson bred
son of The Shadow.  We think very highly of Darol Dickinson as you will see
his brand on the animals of Emperor, Phenomenon, Overwhelmer, The Shadow,
Senator, etc etc.  We hope Guardian will take us that next step after The Shadow
with his flat lateral horn.  He could produce us some amazing females.

"Detonator and Silky" Return home from Horn Showcase 2004
*Update November 13th, 2004*
PCC Detonator places a very close 2nd to the Hudson bull.  He was 59 1/2" tip to
tip at 26 months of age.  30 Silky Empress placed 3rd in her class by only 3/4 of
an inch to the top placing heifer.  Both heifers who beat her were El Coyote Bred
females.  All top three places were the best horn measurements for total horn that
had ever been at the showcase for that age.  Silky took third with the 67 1/4" @ 2 1/2
years of age.  She's well on her way to upper 80" total horn or maybe even into the 90's.

"Joe & Stephanie"
*Update May 28th, 2005*
Lazy J Longhorns has added to date the most important item
to inventory.  Her name is Stephanie.  We were married at 2pm
at Hanover, KS.  Stephanie shares the desire to raise longhorns
as I do.  We are adding more photo's of the wedding all the time.
As we start our 9th year in the longhorn business it already seems
to be one of the best years for us.  So far we have had a very high
percentage of heifers that will stay in our herd for many years to come.
